पाकिस्तान ने १९६२ में फिल्मों पर प्रतिबन्ध लगाना चालू कर दिया था और जब मुहम्मद ज़िया उल-हक ने पाकिस्तान में इस्लामवाद को बढ़ावा देने के लिए कठोर अभिवेचन संहिता (censorship code) को लागू किया, तो १९७९ में प्रतिबन्धों को और कड़ा कर दिया गया।[१] भारतीय फिल्मों और मीडिया पर १९६५ से जो प्रतिबन्ध लगा था, वह २००८ में इस समझौते के साथ हटा लिया गया था कि पाकिस्तान के सिनेमाघरों को भारतीय और पाकिस्तानी फिल्मों को समान रूप से प्रदर्शन-समय देना चाहिए। वर्ष २०१६ में इस प्रतिबन्ध को पुनः लागू कर दिया और भारतीय फिल्मों तथा धारावाहिकों के प्रसारण पर पूर्णतः रोक लगा दी गयी, किन्तु इन फिल्मों और धारावाहिकों के चाहनेवाले VPN के सहायता से इन धारावाहिकों को यूट्यूब पर देख लेते हैं।[२][३]
