विवरण
Qulij Khan accepts the keys to a city in Badakhshan (probably Bust). Attributed to Murad. Mughal, ca. 1646. Musée Guimet, Paris
  • A Mughal miniature from the Padshahnama depicting the surrender of the Safavid Persian garrison of Kandahar in 1638 to the Mughal army of Shah Jahan commanded by Kilij Khan
  • "QULIJ KHAN ACCEPTS THE KEYS TO A CITY IN BADAKHSHAN Attributed to Murad. Mughal, ca. 1646. Opaque watercolor on paper. Folio: 18.7 x 12 in. (48 x 31.5 cm.) Miniature: 13% × 9½ in. (34 x 24.2 cm.) Musée Guimet, Paris
"For the Padshah-nama, however, a rosier episode was chosen, the triumph of Qulij Khan Turani, the devoted follower of the emperor, whose army boasted an elite corps of one thousand Uzbeks, all wearing heron plumes. Noted for piety and fasting, they were equally renowned for gambling and whoring. In the miniature, Qulij Khan accepts the keys of a conquered city, probably Bust, which was captured in the eleventh year of the reign from Mihrab Khan, one of the Iranian shah's abler generals. In the foreground, the Mughal general accepts his enemy's submission, while the background itemizes incidents of the siege: mines exploding the fort's outer walls, and the breach of the inner ones; Mughal forces invading the city; and the capture of Mihrab Khan, who had sought refuge in the citadel. All of this is set forth with verve and sunlit clarity by Murad, who inscribed another of his pictures for the project (Jahangir Receiving Shah Jahan, Windsor Padshah-nama, folio 193v) as by "Nadir az-Zaman's pupil, Murad." The Guimet miniature is easily attributed by comparison with his signed Siege of Daulatabad, folio 143r of the Windsor manuscript."
